The 5G Trust Equation: Network + Identity = Opportunity

With 5G arriving as soon as 2018, the communications industry technology, standards, and business models will underpin significant portions of consumer and enterprise technology platforms. Those platforms need to be designed with identity, trust and security in mind, as they power a more connected, global ecosystem.

With advances in networking, hardware and software technologies, inventions and innovations have become part of our daily lives. 5G will enable and power digitalization of businesses that were once constrained by technology and lack of global ecosystems, which create economies of scale.

Communication service providers (CSPs) are developing strategies for how to best capitalize on the investment  in 5G networks and technologies. Most are considering how to increase their "share of wallet" with services that extend and add value to their network, systems, data and customer segments. In most cases they want to avoid becoming a mere bit pipe that simply connects network endpoints to an increasingly extensive ecosystem of over-the-top (OTT) service providers. "Leverage the core" is a term sometimes used to indicate that new business opportunities and associated revenue streams can be derived from a modern, connected ecosystem.

How do we monetize the Internet of Everything?

Being the operator of networks and associated systems places the CSP at the core of today’s connected lifestyles and businesses. Networks are, as we know, the core enabler for a huge and increasing segment of today’s economy. Financial services, consumer leisure services, industry automation, public safety and healthcare are all examples of major industry sectors that are critically dependent on secure, trusted and reliable networks.

It is against this backdrop that we describe in this series of blog posts how CSPs can incorporate the ForgeRock Identity Platform into their 5G network strategy to deliver telecom-grade identity and security services into IoE ecosystems.

Equipped with these critical business enablers, CSPs can establish themselves as the "Trust Core" of emerging connected ecosystems in the Internet of Everything.

Who’s Tim? In his past, he worked with some big names like Pitney Bowes Software, Experian, and SurfKitchen. These days he serves as the VP of the Communications and Media Industry here at ForgeRock where his mission is to understand what major problems and cool opportunities telecoms and media companies are working on, figure out how ForgeRock can help them, and then lead them down the path to success. Sound easy? Well that’s just Tim’s childhood magician skills being put to work.

Goldilocks may well have ended up an expert in Intelligent Authentication because she was onto something about that bowl of porridge: not too hot, not too cold, but rather just right.

What is OAuth2? A Real World Example.

What is OAuth2? It can seem quite complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Before OAuth2, when you needed to give software services access to your account, you had to give that service your username and password.
